Radio Luit 90.8 FM
The Community Radio Service of Gauhati University
Community Radio is the third model of radio broadcasting beyond commercial and public broadcasting services. It broadcasts contents which are popular and relevant to a local or specific audience but often overlooked by other media. Radio Luit 90.8 FM is the first campus based Community Radio Station in the Northeast. It is a non-profit service. On 18 January 2011, Radio Luit started its trial broadcasting and formally flagged off on 1 March 2011.
It serves community development with active participation in content management, programming and decision making. Gauhati University obtained the license and frequency 90.8 FM from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The station operates 12 hours daily (8 AM–8 PM). Students, faculty and local people actively manage programming.
Radio Luit encourages community participation and allows students to earn while learning production skills. It focuses on themes such as Education, Health, Environment and Culture prioritized for community development.
It is a non-profit empowering community voices in a media-rich world, covering approx 15 km radius around the GU IDOL building studio.
From 2016, Radio Luit launched a year-long project ‘Baandobi’ on women’s health and nutrition supported by NCSTC, DST. The program airs thrice daily, providing a platform to women to showcase talent.
COVID-19 Impact and Response
During COVID-19, broadcasting stopped on 25 March due to unavailability of broadcasters. The team used Facebook Live for 101 days, creating a virtual proximity for listeners despite physical distancing.
The team produced awareness videos aired on TV and social media, broadcasted daily Covid Bulletins ‘Covid Barta’. Regular FM broadcasting resumed on 28 May.
Over the years, Radio Luit produced many popular series like Baandobi, Sarathi, Jeevika, Bhoomi and Jeevan Daata Brikkha, uplifting the community with education and culture.
The station has nurtured students who now excel in diverse careers. Radio Luit aims to continue empowering communities and expanding its outreach.
