Selection Criteria for Admission of International Students

Admission for international students into different academic programs under Gauhati University.

1.1 International Students

Gauhati University welcomes foreign students from all over the world for admission into its programs. Students from about 25 countries including USA, Japan, South Asian and African countries have been admitted. Many MOUs have been signed with universities such as Bizard Institute (UK), University of Greenwich (UK), and others. Efforts continue for joint research and teaching collaborations.

1.1.1 Admission

Gauhati University has separate guidelines for Graduate, Masters, and Research Program admissions. Academic qualifications recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) are the admission criteria. Up to 20% supernumerary seats are reserved for International/NRI students. ‘International student’ means having a valid passport at the time of application. Students from MHRD’s negative list countries will not be admitted.

Categories for international admissions include:

  • Self-financing students (full programme)
  • Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programmes (Govt. of India) via ICCR Fellowship Portal
  • Visiting Students under MOUs per respective agreements

The admission form is available at http://www.gauhati.ac.in. Documents and filled admission form must reach secyuc@gauhati.ac.in at least 90 days before admission.

Graduate Programme

Offers 44 undergraduate programmes including the Five Year Integrated Masters Programme (FYIMP). Entrance tests and TOEFL scores are waived for international students. Non-English documents must be certified translations by Embassy or High Commissioner.

Masters Programme

Up to 20% seats reserved; eligibility as per prospectus available on Gauhati University Official Website. TOEFL score required if English is not mother tongue. Proof of financial support required.

Entrance test exemption may apply except for international students residing in India. Submit documents to Admissions Email: secyuc@gauhati.ac.in 90 days before admission.

Ph.D. Programme

Admission involves common entrance test (GU-RET) and counseling. International students exempted from GU-RET. Counseling may happen via video conference. Minimum 55% marks or equivalent required. Applications and research proposals are to be sent to Academic Registrar Email.

English proficiency must be demonstrated through TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent. Proof of financial support is mandatory.

VISA Requirements

Valid Student or Research Visa must be produced at admission. Details at Ministry of External Affairs, India.

  • Medical fitness certificate from recognized hospital in home country
